Nurturing art for and by the people, where they live and work.

(2009 round) 989 Market – Paul Hayes

Giant Ghosts

Description: This storefront includes life-size floating figures made out of crumpled, white paper and illuminated from below with a bright blue light. Moving air currents in the space make the figures gently sway, giving them a striking, life-like presence. The artist intends to trigger the imagination and bring processed, man-made paper back to the kind of arrangement that occurs naturally in biology.

Artist: Paul Hayes received a BFA in Illustration from Rhode Island School of Design and has been living in San Francisco since 2001. His site-specific installations consist of vast swarms of crumpled or folded pieces of paper suspended on strands of wire. Recent examples of Hayes' works have been shown at the San Francisco Arts Commission's Grove Street Space, the Exploratorium, Alcatraz, Red Ink Studios, and Johansson Projects Gallery.
