De la Calzada covers the façade of the old Strand Theater with a detailed charcoal drawing of tangles strands of hair, transforming the building into a wrapped environment. Unlike traditional murals the wall drawing challenges the spatial boundaries of art, playfully engaging with the architectural space creating a sense of wonder. Funded by the Department of Public Works.
Artist: Paz de la Calzada is a native of Madrid, Spain, having moved to the Bay Area after participating in the Djerassi Resident Artist Program in Woodside, CA. She received her BFA at the University of Salamanca, Spain and her MFA was awarded from UNAM, Mexico City. Her work has been exhibited in the United States, Europe, and Mexico.
