2012 Youth Arts Summit

We were thrilled to be a part of the second annual Youth Arts Summit– produced by Out of Site at SOMArts on Saturday, December 8, from 2-6:30 pm. Our teaching artists and students were in great company at the summit, joined by YBCA Young Artists at Work, the Children’s Creativity Museum, Marsh Youth Theater, BAYCAT, June Jordan High School, Root Division, Chrysalis Studio, and our partners at Oasis for Girls and TILT-Ninth Street Independent Film Center.

Dance performance

Our teaching artist, Rose Tully, along with film instructors Robyn Bykofsky and Kelly Pendergrast from TILT, taught a poetry writing and filmmaking workshop to a group of students as part of the summit. Students worked on short poems, created quick storyboards, shot video around the SOMArts space, and then edited their footage into short films. Watch one of the films here!

Working on poems

Students from Oasis for Girls, who have been working on a poetry and performance piece with our teaching artist Roseli Ilano all semester, presented their work in the exhibition space.

Oasis for Girls

All in all, it was an exciting day filled with workshops, performances, tasty snacks, and hanging out with friends. Already looking forward to next year!

Thank you to J. Astra Brinkmann for the excellent photos! More here.
