San Francsico WritersCorps believes in the power of the written word. Our writer teachers inspire nearly 600 youth each year, helping them develop their writing, public speaking and communication skills. We focus on youth whose voices are historically underrepresented or ignored, and provide meaningful opportunities for them to learn and grow.

Evaluation results prove that our program works. Data from 2000 through 20088 shows that 85% of WritersCorps youth demonstrated improvements in writing.

From our surveys, we’ve learned that:

• 80.6% of youth agreed that “I am able to communicate better with other students.”
• 89% of youth agreed that “I have learned how to identify and express my feelings.”
• 77% of youth agreed that “My spelling, grammar, and punctuation have improved.”
• 71% of youth increased their public speaking skills.

WritersCorps, proud to be a part of the San Francisco Arts Commission, exemplifies the best in innovative city services.
