Welcome to the 2005 WritersCorps Boxed Set. WritersCorps presents ten new books featuring nearly 600 young writers who participated in our 2004–05 program. At WritersCorps, we provide writing workshops at schools, libraries, after school programs, and juvenile facilities. Our current WritersCorps students speak over twenty different languages, hail from six different continents, and live in neighborhoods throughout San Francisco.
During the course of a school year, accomplished writers inspire young people to become a part of a growing writing community. Through great effort, these young writers experience the challenges and rewards of sharing a part of themselves with the world.
To help us bring these books to life, WritersCorps invited photographer
and writer Katharine Gin to join our team. Katharine worked individually with hundreds of youth in the course of four months, providing artistic instruction and teaching her students about the incredible power of photography. She was a dedicated community partner with everyone involved and her talents and hard work made this collaboration a resounding success. In addition to the marvelous writing, these books showcase over 200 images taken by and of
our youth.
Where Were You is the book we’re calling the “best of” set. Here you will find youth ages 13–21, representing all our sites, determined to put their mark on the world. And they have done just that. I am extremely proud of the efforts of the youth, the teachers and the staff at WritersCorps to bring such a fine collection of writing to you. Janet Heller, WritersCorps Project Manager
