Call for Submissions: Mid-Market Art Project

The Mid-Market Art Project (MMAP), in conjunction with the San Francisco Art Institute, is seeking artists to submit art project proposals to take place in the mid-market neighborhood of San Francisco in March 2012.

MMAP is a collaborative group of graduate students from SFAI interested in the role of the arts in the process of cultural development, urban renewal, and how art can change idle or vacant spaces. What is an artist’s role in the cultural development of a city? How do the arts fuel change and urban renewal? How can an art intervention transform a vacant or idle space? MMAP invites artists to focus on these issues of cultural development by choosing a specific idle or vacant space on Market Street, between 5th and 8th, to display the project as a mid-market community art interaction. The goal of MMAP is to facilitate a conversation about arts’ interactions with a neighborhood community that is currently undergoing cultural development.

Three chosen artists will display their work on site in the mid-market neighborhood in March 2012, will be included in a post-project show in a San Francisco gallery, and will be featured in a printed project publication, as well as on the MMAP website.

Submission Guidelines:
MMAP welcomes any submission that adheres to the following criteria. Artists from the mid-market neighborhood are encouraged to apply.

Submission deadline is December 27th, 2011 (11pm Pacific Standard Time).
Artists will be notified on January 5th, 2012.
