The San Francisco Bureau of Urban Secrets

The San Francisco Bureau of Urban Secrets has been in the business of marking time since at least 2001. For Now & When, they have published the sites of eight instances of encapsulated history, sealed as sound and image, at eight different moments from 1776 to the present (the Bureau modestly acknowledges its well-established expertise in time travel). These “time capsules” may be accessed vicariously in the gallery, but they are really to be found elsewhere in the City, in the space between place and history.

Instructions:
Agents of the Bureau are called upon to participate in the Infinitely Expanding Time Capsule Initiative, part of "If Only We'd Known How We'd Want to Remember It," in conjunction with Now & When at SFAC Gallery.

This is your chance to make your own rules. Choose a location & open a case file with the Bureau. (Case files are available in the SFAC Gallery.)  Decide when your case begins (you too can move back and forth in time). Choose the contents of your case and file it according to instructions.

Time Capsules are freely available to Agents of the Bureau at the Arts Commission Gallery and can be returned there during the run of the exhibition.*
