Ebtekar’s print, A Breath of Fresh Air, was produced in collaboration with Electric Works. While visiting Iran in 2000, Ebtekar found an 80 year old book at a Friday bazaar that has became the inspiration for an entire body of work. The text is in Farsi and Arabic, and contains instructions by multiple authors on how to pray. The juxtaposition of conceptual and stylistic elements generates a timely political statement within a format that blends street-style graphics with traditional Iranian text and design.
A 2006 MFA graduate of Stanford University, Ala Ebtekar is represented by Gallery Paule Anglim in San Francisco. He was a 2005 recipient of the SF Foundation’s Murphy & Cadogan Fellowship in the Arts Award. He recently completed a six month residency in Paris with Cité Internationale des Arts. His work has been featured at venues including: The Asia Society, NY, NY; the Orange County Museum of Art, Newport Beach, CA; Flawless Gallery, London, UK; the De Young Museum, San Francisco, CA; The Third Line Gallery, Dubai, UAE; and the Berkeley Art Museum, Berkeley, CA.
