The Clog! Celebration – Recap.
On Thursday, March 24, 2011, the SFAC Gallery hosted a one-night celebration for The Clog, an online component of the Isn’t Obvious? exhibition. Exhibition curator, Aimee Le Duc brought together a small group of writers, performers and artists to either contribute directly to the Clog or to take the stage and read, recite or perform something having to do with the concepts confronted in the exhibition.
The result was a hilarious, spontaneous mixture of deadpan comments, madcap antics, a lot of laughter and some well-placed observations about how challenging it can be to articulate what is obvious in each of our lives.
The experimental nature of the event fell directly in line with the exhibition since it too was really an experiment (and a risky one at that). Gallery director, Meg Shiffler, handed the curatorial reigns over to gallery manager, Aimee Le Duc for the first time and through Meg’s incredible trust and leadership, Aimee was able to bring together not only a dynamic group of artists but to also host this strange and strangely successful Clog celebration event.
The following Clog posts are the remnants and repeats of the evening’s highlights. Please feel free to read through them and make any comments you see fit.
Aimee Le Duc breaks down the true meaning of the Clog.
Program Details: Invited Performers and Writers: Shannon Green, Joyce Grimm, Matt Kennedy, Aimee Le Duc, Emma Spertus, Beatrice Thomas, Zoe Taleporos
A fast-paced and cheeky celebration of all things obvious. In conjunction with the SFAC Gallery exhibition, Isn't It Obvious? San Francisco Artists Consuming the Banal, we have invited some obviously brilliant writers, artists, performers and curators to present short but potent tributes to what is most obvious about this exhibition as well as their own lives and work.
- Aimee Le Duc, SFAC gallery manager and exhibition curator will open the evening with brief introductions about the exhibition and how it came into being.
- Beatrice Thomas will be presenting the algorithms and raw data behind what is most obvious in her current life, the online dating industrial machine.
- Shannon Green, SFAC gallery assistant will be showcasing the SFAC Gallery store where we are only selling plungers and all proceeds will go back to maintaining the store. Shannon puts the fun in fundraising!
- Matt Kennedy will be screening his video, Laughing to be followed up with a not-awkward-at-all Q&A session with Aimee Le Duc.
- Emma Spertus will show us a series of books (which are like a blog in object form) she is working on for an upcoming exhibition of Bay Area artists at the Apartment in Vancouver, Canada.
- Joyce Grimm will then close the program acting as the evening's discussant, which is seen as a performative act bringing all activities together under cohesive threads of thinking.
This is an experimental project that will join a live event with an online extension of the Isn’t It Obvious? exhibition. Everything produced from the live evening will be recorded and posted on The Clog as well as some additional contributions from more artists, writers and thinker.
Don’t miss out on this one-of-a-kind way to experience an exhibition.

About The Clog
Isn’t It Obvious will also have an online component, The Clog. A tongue-in-cheek combination of an exhibition catalog and a blog, The Clog will serve as a site for critical examination of the work in the exhibition and it will also serve as an outlet for all viewers responses to the question, “Isn’t It Obvious?”. This online project will also be a source to connect the public programs to larger dialogs occurring in the art community.
