Ala Ebtekar
A Breath of Air, 2006
archival pigment print
9 ½ x 22 ¾ “ image / 10 ½ x 24” paper
Edition of 15
$600

Ebtekar’s print, A Breath of Fresh Air, was produced in collaboration with Electric Works. While visiting Iran in 2000, Ebtekar found an 80 year old book at a Friday bazaar that has became the inspiration for an entire body of work. The text is in Farsi and Arabic, and contains instructions by multiple authors on how to pray. The juxtaposition of conceptual and stylistic elements generates a timely political statement within a format that blends street-style graphics with traditional Iranian text and design.

A 2006 MFA graduate of Stanford University, Ala Ebtekar is represented by Gallery Paule Anglim in San Francisco. He was a 2005 recipient of the SF Foundation’s Murphy & Cadogan Fellowship in the Arts Award. He recently completed a six month residency in Paris with Cité Internationale des Arts. His work has been featured at venues including: The Asia Society, NY, NY; the Orange County Museum of Art, Newport Beach, CA; Flawless Gallery, London, UK; the De Young Museum, San Francisco, CA; The Third Line Gallery, Dubai, UAE; and the Berkeley Art Museum, Berkeley, CA.

The San Francisco Arts Commission Gallery is pleased to offer a monoprint by Leslie Shows, produced exclusively for the SFAC Gallery. Shows created a unique pattern for each print using a monoprinting technique. Finally, incorporating her elegant and complex collage process, the process resulted in a series where no two prints are alike! These remarkable monoprints are Shows’ foundational pieces exploring imagery that will inform an upcoming video project.

Shows received a BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute, and her MFA at the California College of the Arts. Shows was included in Bay Area Now 5 at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. Her work has also been exhibited at the Orange County Museum of Art, Newport Beach, CA; Armory Show, NY; Frieze Art Fair, London, England; and Art Basel Miami Beach, Art Nova, Miami, FL. Solo Exhibitions include Jack Hanley Gallery, Los Angeles and San Francisco. A recipient of the SFMOMA 2006 SECA Art Award, her work was featured at SFMOMA in early 2007 and is also included in their permanent collection.

SFAC Passport 2009
Complete stamped book, unique
Edition of 500
$200

In 2009 the SFAC Gallery inaugurated Passport, an annual event that invites the public to stroll through one of San Francisco’s neighborhoods to create their own limited edition art book by collecting “passport stamps” made by local artists.

For Passport, the SFAC Gallery commissioned Bay Area artists; Libby Black, Michelle Blade, Lisa Congdon, Veronica de Jesus, Maria Forde, Colter Jacobson, Sean McFarland, Barry McGee, Maria Porges, Andrew Schoultz, Tara Tucker and Marci Washington—to each create their own version of a passport stamp. Participants purchased a passport booklet, (featuring a cover-design created by artist Tucker Nichols specifically for this project,) and then followed a map to various neighborhood locations where they collected artist-made stamps. Passport 2009 took place in San Francisco’s Mission District, celebrating its longstanding status as the hub of the city’s art community.

If you missed this year's event and was not able to purchase a Passport, the SFAC has made a few completed Passports available to sell. All proceeds from the event directly support SFAC Gallery’s programming, which included support for artist honoraria and exhibition costs.

J. John Priola
Three Weep Holes, 2005
gelatin silver print
15" x 9.75"
Edition of 10
$200

J. John Priola shows a series of black-and-white pictures that continue his survey of undernoticed details of domestic architecture.

This time he has turned his attention to vent grates in house foundations and the "weep holes" in retaining walls that permit drainage. As in "Hillhurst Avenue" (2007), he offers these tiny architectural epiphanies, in a plainspoken manner, in big prints with wall, aperture, sidewalk and perhaps a fringe of vegetation forming a nearly depthless, nearly abstract pattern.A series of postcard-size prints examines single weeds obtruding, one or two at a time, between wall and sidewalk.

Priola poises these images on the border between documentary and conceptual art. They seem to equate the insufficient attention people give to details of the world and the insufficient attention they give to photographs. Such an equation would risk insulting the viewer, did Priola not effect it so discreetly that it too may pass unnoticed. Priola also quietly revives what Vancouver, British Columbia, photographer Roy Arden calls "the romance of the index" - the excitement of believing, in the Photoshop age, that the phenomenon before the lens left its own photo-chemical imprint.

Valerie George
On the Grass, from the series Recapturing Grace 2005
B&W photo
13" x 19"
Edition of 10
$200

Valerie George’s work is best categorized in new genres. She uses a variety of mediums, chosen particularly, to best support each concept and project.

The spectacle and diverse popular practices of escapism are the underpinnings of my current research. The quagmire where pop culture meets subculture, public space meets private space, and consumer culture meets service aesthetics, propels these investigations of social cultural phenomena. Her work is ever changing and expands with the evolution of our societies’ fickle taste and favored routines, social structures, and engagements.
