SAN FRANCISCO, May 13, 2013 - On May 24, past and present will collide as a large-scale mastodon of the recycled cardboard variety appears in a Jurassic landscape in the heart of the Civic Center. The Cardboard Institute of Technology (C.I.T.) artist collective unveils its latest Bay Area construction,TRUDGE, at the SFAC Galleries Window Installation Site on Friday, May 24.

"When people pass by the window installation site they'll catch a massive dinosaur walking into the sunset!" said SFAC Galleries Director Meg Shiffler, "The Cardboard Institute of Technology is so inventive. Passersby will be amazed by what can be achieved with such a simple material."

Founded in 2007 by Joshua Short and Scott Falkowski, C.I.T. is a self-described "collective of artists, technologists and handymen dedicated to the development, functionality and everyday practice of art...through cardboard and other means." Joshua Short, Jesse Wilson, Joel Stockdill, Mike Murnane, and Robin Frohardt, members of the group took turns working on the massive installation made from recycled cardboard over an 18-day period.

C.I.T. wants the public to interpret the installation on their own terms, however Short admits that it might bring to mind our relationship with the earth, and with fossil fuels in particular. He is quick to also add that, "C.I.T. is more about provoking dialogue around liberty than around politics. We like to look at the big picture and are drawn to narratives that comment on the human condition at large."

2013 Sister City Exchange: San Francisco - Zürich

The San Francisco Arts Commission Gallery has teamed up with the City of Zürich to present a dynamic, multifaceted, travelling exhibition project celebrating the 10th anniversary of our Sister City relationship. SFAC Galleries piloted the biennial Sister City Exchange in 2011 with Sydney, AU, and has greatly expanded the scope of this important cultural exchange project with the Zürich collaboration. In addition to a central exhibition featuring artwork by emerging and mid-career photographers from SF and Zürich, there will be downtown kiosk posters, educational programs and public events that accompany the exhibition in each city.

TWISTED SISTERS is co-curated by SFAC Galleries Director, Meg Shiffler and Zürich-based independent curator Alexandra Blättler. They asked conceptual photographers from each city to create new and unexpected urban portraits. The resulting 80+ images challenge and occasionally subvert stereotypes associated with these two great metropolises through narratives and landscapes that strip away, twist, or dig under the picture-perfect postcard and expose nasty histories, private lives, hidden views and constructed alter-realities.

Friday, April 26, 6-8 p.m. SFAC Main Gallery, 401 Van Ness Avenue (@ McAllister)

After seventeen years, the SFAC Main Gallery, will close while the War Memorial Veterans Building undergoes a seismic retrofit. Don’t worry, the SFAC Galleries isn’t going anywhere! In 2015, we look forward to welcoming you to our new 4000-sq-ft gallery in the Veterans Building featuring expanded exhibition, programing and office space as well as a small retail store. Until then, we will continue to bring exciting exhibitions to City Hall and commission site-specific installations for our Grove Street Window Site.

In the meantime, it’s time to party! Help us close this chapter with a toast to all of the excellent exhibitions and programs we’ve presented at this location and celebrate the highly successful run of Conversation 6: Jason Hanasik and Berndnaut Smilde. This is your opportunity to meet Hanasik and check out Smilde’s latest cloud prints, which were shot in the historic Green Room.

A limited number of the amazing Nimbus prints are available for sale, and we’ll also open up our print archive for viewing and purchase.

Get a sneak preview of our new gallery space. Our floor plan for the new space will be on view and we’ll collect your feedback on the “Envision The New SFAC Main Gallery With Us!” board.

Leave your mark by contributing stories about your involvement with the SFAC Galleries for a time capsule that will be put into a wall in the new gallery.

And because this is a SFAC Gallery party there will be plenty of delicious beverages and tasty treats!

See you there!

Deadline: June 1, 2013

Root Division is a visual arts non-profit located in the Mission District of San Francisco. Root Division’s mission is to improve appreciation and access to the visual arts by connecting personal inspiration with community engagement.
