Date and Time: Tuesday August 31, 7:30-8:30 PM
Location: Intersection for the Arts, 446 Valencia Street (Btwn 15th and 16th)
Tickets: Available at the door only. $5-$15 sliding scale. All proceeds go to pay the participating actors.
Join us for Circular Time, a live reading of artist Packard Jenning's project, Longshot: Dining Labor and Ponies on view now at the SFAC Gallery as part of the exhibition Now & When. For Longshot, Jennings invited eight conceptual artists to meet in the private dining room of an upscale restaurant to discuss what project to make with their project budget provided by the gallery. The brainstorming for a time capsule took place over the course of a three-hour meal. After the bill was paid there was not enough stipend left to produce the project. All that remained was the conversation.

During this live performance, Jennings has hired actors to read a transcription of the Longshot dinner conversation. The names of the original particiapting artists will be left anonymous with the idea that the potential value of this reading comes, not from thinking of any specific artist’s perspective, but from experiencing a collaborative conversation between a group of artists. Like revealing the larger mass of ice that lay beneath the small cap of an iceberg, we want to make this normally invisible aspect of art-making visible.

The point of this work was to value process over product, to fund the development side of a work, rather than a physical final object. Please join us for this unusual experiment.
Based on the project Longshot: Dining Labor and Ponies by Packard Jennings with Amy Balkin, Anthony Discenzam Aaron Gachm Jonn Herschend, Lizabeth Rossof, Steve Shada and Stephanie Syjuco. Currently on view as part of Now & When at the SFAC Gallery through Saturday, September 4, 2010.

THE DETAILS
SFAC Gallery has commissioned fourteen Bay Area artists this year, including Ana Fernandez, Suzanne Husky, Jason Jagel, Paul Madonna, Nigel Poor, and Lordy Rodriquez to create their own version of a passport stamp for the event, which will be held in San Francisco’s Hayes Valley neighborhood. In a special contribution, the estate of the late Richard Diebenkorn will provide an additional stamp—a hand-carved wooden seal designed by the artist for the label of his own home-brewed beer.

HOW DOES THIS WORK?
To participate, art enthusiasts may purchase a Passport 2010 booklet for only $25 (a Moleskine® notebook donated by Chronicle Books that features a custom artist-designed cover) then follow a map to various Hayes Valley locations to get the book stamped by the artists themselves. Past “stamps” have been quite elaborate, sometimes involving hand-finished touches or performative elements. This year promises to bring similar surprises and attention to detail. Stamp locations in Hayes Valley will include Zonal, Rooky Records, MAC, Isotope Comics, and others. Proceeds from this fundraising event go toward the SFAC Gallery’s programming fund, which supports artist honoraria and exhibition costs throughout its entire season.

Passport 2010 begins the evening of Saturday, October 9 with a Kick-Off Party at The Rickshaw Stop, featuring passport pre-sales, live music, raffle, a full no-host bar, and many more surprises. The following day the event convenes at Patricia’s Green on Hayes Street at Octavia, which will serve as Passport 2010 Home Base between the hours of noon and 4pm. During that time participants can stop by to pick up a map, purchase a passport, or bring family and friends to relax on the lawn and enjoy a hot dog and soda while mingling with other Passport 2010 revelers.

HOW DO I GET A PASSPORT?
Passports may be purchased in advance online at www.eventbrite.com, and at the Passport 2010 Kick-Off Party.
Event Summary: Performance in which the artist will enter the water at Alcatraz (9 AM) and swim to Aquatic Park (anticipated arrival 10AM) while accompanied by the band Coconut. The public is invited to gather at Aquatic Park.

Continuing his artistic inquiry into the heroic nature of athletes and athletic feats, Pawl Kruk will swim from Alcatraz to Aquatic Park surrounded by a group of friends contributing to the performance in various ways. As the public cheers from the shore, Kruk’s swim will be accompanied by the two-person band Coconut performing live music on a small vessel propelled by oars, a videographer and photographer documenting the sounds and scenes of the performance, and another vessel carrying a group of spectators, whose presence will also contribute to the work. San Francisco’s South End Rowing Club’s history and their role in the dynamics of the interaction between people and the Bay will underlie the entire event. Documentation will be posted on the SFAC Gallery web site.

Kruk, a performance artist originally from Warsaw, spent a short time at the Headlands Center for the Arts in 2002, and then returned as an Affiliate Artist in 2007. In 2008 he was a Fellow at Kala Art Institute in Berkeley. Kruk exhibits internationally and in 2003 was included in the Whitney Museum of American Art’s major exhibition The American Effect. He had a critically acclaimed solo exhibition at San Francisco’s David Cunningham Projects in 2009 and is currently a finalist for the 2010 SECA Award at SFMOMA.

Acknowledgments: David Cunningham, Buck Delventhal, Justin Limoges, Airyka Rockefeller, Richard T. Walker, Members of the South End Rowing Club and Electric Works.

This conversation will question what “evidence” is as it pertains to objects that help inform history or reflect humanity. We will also consider observations of value associated with objects, and how that relationship is formed and maintained through time. Curated and moderated by Gallery Assistant Shannon Green, these conversations will introduce the artists’ work in the exhibition and the guests’ demarcation of time in their own professions. As the events unfurl, the discussion will be opened up for audience participation. The aim of this programming is to make the art of Now and When and ideas of time more accessible and meaningful.

Gay Outlaw is an artist who has been exhibiting her work in San Francisco since the early 1990’s and has had solo exhibitions at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the University of California at Long Beach, Mills College Art Museum, and the San Jose Museum of Contemporary Art. THE LIST will be inclusive of all creative disciplines and will focus on residencies, conferences, conventions, and calls for entries, papers, and proposals in the Bay Area, nationwide, and other key centers of art internationally.

How does THE LIST Work?

We track a large volume of websites which post opportunities of interest and share these as a single feed we call THE LIST using a tool called Google Reader. The best way to keep up with THE LIST is to subscribe and follow THE LIST using Google Reader to take advantage of Google’s search functions, organize the interesting opportunities that you find, tag them, and easily share them with others. Here are tips to get you started if you’re new to Google Reader. If you prefer not to use Google Reader, view the list in its most basic form here.

Two thought provoking Public Programs for Now & When that engage exhibiting artists and special guests in dialogue about art and time...

These two public programs partner artists from the SFAC Gallery exhibition, Now and When and members of our community who approach the subject of time in distinct and meaningful ways. And to have some fun! Seats are limited to 30 for each event and are available by reservation. Please RSVP to the SFAC Gallery (415-554-6080 or sfac.gallery@sfgov.org) no later than 24 hours prior to the event date.

Tick-Tock: Linear and Visceral Expressions of Time

Jeannene Przyblyski of The Bureau of Urban Secrets in conversation with Alexander Rose of The Long Now Foundation.

Wednesday, August 18, 6:30 – 8:00pm, talk and short reception following

SFAC Main Gallery at 401 Van Ness at McAllister inside the Veteran’s Building

This conversation will juxtapose a linear approach to time with a not so linear approach. Participants will talk about moments as an events and the culmination of events as a single moment.

Jeannene Przyblyski is an artist and also the Vice President and Dean of Academic Affairs and Chair of the History and Theory of Contemporary Art program in the School for Interdisciplinary Studies at the San Francisco Art Institute. She is also the Executive Director of the San Francisco Bureau of Urban Secrets – an urban and visual arts think tank that promotes art and political intervention in city life. For Now & When the Bureau created podcasts that document the sites of eight instances of encapsulated history, sealed as sound an image, at eight different moments from 1776 to the present (the Bureau modestly acknowledges its well-established expertise in time travel). These time capsules may be accessed through the SFAC Gallery web site: www.sfartscommission.org/gallery/2010/bureau.

Alexander Rose is the Executive Director of The Long Now Foundation (established in 1996 to creatively foster long-term thinking and responsibility in the framework of the next 10,000 years) and the Project Manager for the 10,000 year clock. He has facilitated numerous projects including the 10,000 year clock, seminars about Long Term Thinking and the Rosetta Project. He has also been an artist in residence at Silicon Graphics Inc., a project manager for Shamrock Communications, and a founding partner of Inertia Labs. http://www.longnow.org/

Southern Exposure is now accepting applications for Alternative Exposure 2010, Round IV.

Alternative Exposure grants provide direct support to visual arts projects in San Francisco and Alameda Counties that provide frameworks of support for artists to create and continue their work. It gives grants of up to $3,500 to support the work of unincorporated groups, burgeoning art venues and gathering spaces, publications, collectives, events and more.

Projects can include an exhibition or exhibition series, a public art project, a one time event or performance, the ongoing work of a venue or collective, the publication of writing directly related to the visual arts, an online project or publication, an artist residency, a series of screenings, and more. Southern Exposure’s Alternative Exposure grant program seeks to fuel the energy of the Bay Area visual arts community by supporting the vibrant artistic activity that occurs on the ground level – artists or groups of artists making and presenting work in a committed but informal way.

APPLICATION DEADLINE: Applications must be received at Southern Exposure’s office by 6:00pm on Wednesday, September 15, 2010 (this is not a postmark date). Hand deliveries will be accepted.

TO APPLY: Go to the APPLY Section of the AltEx website for grant guidelines and application materials: www.soex.org/alternativeexposure

A Brief History of Alternative Exposure
Southern Exposure’s Alternative Exposure grant program was launched in 2007 in partnership with The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts in response to the desire to support the independent, under-the-radar work of artists and small groups that is a defining feature of the San Francisco Bay Area art community. Now entering its fourth year, SoEx has awarded $155,000 in direct funds to [LINK TO GRANTEES PAGE] 50 Bay Area projects through the first three rounds of Alternative Exposure. Southern Exposure is committed to continuing to serve as a resource for the independent visual arts community through Alternative Exposure and our other programs.

A National Network
Since developing Alternative Exposure with SoEx, The Andy Warhol Foundation has invested in the creation of a growing national network of regional re-granting programs – supporting The Idea Fund (www.theideafund.org) in Houston, Texas; The Propeller Fund (www.propellerfund.org) in Chicago, Illinois; and Rocket Grants (www.charlottestreet.org/opportunities/rocket-grants/) Kansas City, Missouri. The Foundation aims to support the independent creative activity of artists by partnering with leading artist-centered, visual arts organizations across the country. Groups like Southern Exposure allow them to reach the sizeable population of informal, non-incorporated artist collectives and projects.
