Teaching Artist
Performing Arts Workshop (The Workshop), established in 1965, is an arts education organization dedicated to helping young people develop critical thinking, creative expression, and basic learning skills through the arts. The Workshop serves culturally diverse, low-income youth by placing artists in after school programs, public schools, child development centers, and community centers in the Bay Area.
The Workshop seeks artists with teaching experience in one or more art forms listed below:- Dance (Creative Movement)
- World Dance (For example Hip-hop, Salsa, African, Brazilian, or Capoeira)
- Theatre Arts
- Creative Writing (Poetry, playwriting, etc.)
- Music (Drumming, choral, rap/hip-hop, etc.)
Staff Artists Receive:
- 8 to 30 week residencies for children and youth from pre-kindergarten to high school
- Paid professional development
- Paid monthly artistic staff meetings
- Advancement opportunity and employment benefits
- Paid Internship: Cycle of Artistic Inquiry Introduction; a framework for critical thinking in the arts
Required Qualifications:
- Compositional knowledge of art form(s)
- Commitment to youth development, building self-efficacy, social justice, and cultural awareness
- At least 3 years of teaching process-based art composition to children and youth from pre-kindergarten to high school
- Excellent verbal, written, interpersonal communication skills
- Computer and organizational skills such as: timely response through email, familiarity with web-based tools, knowledge of basic computer applications
- B.A. degree (or equivalent experience) in Dance, Theatre Arts, Creative Writing, and/or World Music;
- Experience working with English Language Learners, students with special needs, so called at-risk youth, and youth in the Juvenile Justice system
- A demonstrated commitment to youth development particularly to young people who face significant academic, socioeconomic, and other personal challenges.

- If requested, 45 minute to 1 hour interview with Artistic Director
- If requested, 30-45 minute audition at an existing program site with 10-30 students
