THE 38TH ANNUAL KPFA CRAFTS & MUSIC FAIR SHOWCASES YOUNG CREATIVE TALENT FROM THE ARTS PROVIDER ALLIANCE OF SAN FRANCISCO

December 13 & 14, 2008

SAN FRANCISCO — The 38th Annual KPFA Crafts & Music Fair, the largest weekend holiday craft fair of its kind in Northern California, returns to the Concourse Exhibition Center in San Francisco this December 13 & 14, 2008 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day. This year, an exciting, new partnership with the Arts Provider Alliance of San Francisco (APASF) a project of the Intersection of the Arts will introduce Fair visitors to the moving work of dozens of young artists, teaching artists and authors and will provide creative hands-on activities for visitors attending the Fair.

APASF, an active network of over 80 artists and arts organizations in the Bay Area sponsored by the San Francisco Art Commission, is dedicated to bringing youth, artists, teachers, parents and the community together to showcase the creative talents of San Francisco’s student population. APASF members are engaged in providing children and youth educational opportunities in the visual, literary and performing arts in school settings.

At the Fair, APASF will showcase the outstanding artistic achievements of the San Francisco Unified School District’s students, teachers and organizations with a visual art exhibition, literary and spoken word, poetry readings, interviews and live art demonstrations by APASF teaching artists. The organization will also offer Fair visitors a chance to roll up their sleeves to make their own painting or craft project to take home.

The Fair is also honored to celebrate the 15th Anniversary of the San Francisco Arts Commission’s award winning WritersCorps program that places professional writers in communities underserved by the arts. WritersCorps will be on hand to sell copies of a new collection of poetry by urban teens called “Tell the World” (HarperCollins; October 13, 2008).

Frank and honest poems demonstrate the strength of youth voices, 75 teens (32 from San Francisco) “tell the world” about their lives: who they are, where they’re from, what they love, what they think and what they are feeling. Their insights and keen observations offer a rare glimpse into the inner lives of teens, and give voice to their deepest hopes and dreams. Several of the young authors will sign books, perform spoken word and will read on-air from the collection during the Fair.

Fair organizer Jan Etre is thrilled to introduce Fair visitors to the work of these young people. “The presence of APASF at the Fair creates a unique opportunity for visitors to see some of the emerging talent in San Francisco,” says Etre. “It’s a great way to introduce fair guests to the full spectrum of the arts community and to honor the work of the hundreds of professional artists working so hard in our schools to foster the next generation of Fair exhibitors.”

Admission to the Fair is $10.00 for adults, $7.00 for seniors and disabled, children under 17 are admitted free. The Concourse Exhibition Center is located at 635 8th Street at Brannan in San Francisco. The Fair makes it easy for eco-conscious visitors to attend by providing complimentary shuttles from the Civic Center BART Station, 8th and Market MUNI bus stop, and the Caltrain station at 4th and King Streets. Valet bicycle parking provided by the SF Bicycle Coalition. Carpooling is available with spaceshare.com.
