The Director's Desk: Budget Updates
At this time of severe retrenchment in public resources at the state and local level, it is worth recalling that the arts are one of the main reasons why tourists flock to our City and define San Francisco as a cultural destination. The Hotel Tax revenue, which is presently down due to the recession, will only bounce back quicker and stronger with a vibrant cultural sector. The Hotel Tax contributes millions each year to the General Fund, helping the City meet its social service and public health goals, in addition to its cultural goals. It is for this reason that Mayor Gavin Newsom proposed continued strong support to the cultural sector in the budget that he presented to the Board of Supervisors.
On Monday, June 22, the Arts Commission will have its public hearing with the Supervisors at City Hall, Room 250.
Public testimony on all General Fund departments will be heard beginning at 5pm that day. There is no scheduled order for public testimony; first come, first heard.
Please come and voice your support for the impact of the arts on your community. Thanks, Luis R. Cancel Director of Cultural Affairs

The San Francisco Arts Commission Gallery is pleased to offer at a modest price a Leslie Shows monoprint,
produced during the May 16th ON YOUR MARK fundraiser for the gallery held at Electric Works. Those who joined us at the fundraiser got an insider’s view into the creative process while the artist conducted demonstrations that produced an edition of twenty monoprints for sale. Beginning with a layer created by digital pigment printing, Shows created a unique pattern for each print using a monoprinting technique. Finally, incorporating her elegant and complex collage process, the process resulted in a series where no two prints are alike! These remarkable monoprints are Shows’ foundational pieces exploring imagery that will inform an upcoming video project.
To purchase a Leslie Shows monoprint for $525 please call the SFAC Gallery at 415.554.6080 Tuesday – Saturday, or email Gallery Director Meg Shiffler at
meg.shiffler@sfgov.org. The Gallery offers a three month installment plan as a purchase option. All proceeds go to SFAC Gallery’s programming fund supporting artist honoraria and exhibition costs.
Shows received a BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute, and her MFA at the California College of the Arts. Shows was included in Bay Area Now 5 at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. Her work has also been exhibited at the Orange County Museum of Art, Newport Beach, CA; Armory Show, NY; Frieze Art Fair, London, England; and Art Basel Miami Beach, Art Nova, Miami, FL. Solo Exhibitions include Jack Hanley Gallery, Los Angeles and San Francisco. A recipient of the SFMOMA 2006 SECA Art Award, her work was featured at SFMOMA in early 2007 and is also included in their permanent collection.
