Art in Storefronts Makes a Big Splash; Next Neighborhood Launch,November 20 Art in Storefronts, the new Arts Commission initiative that transforms vacant storefronts into art installations, will launch its third and final location on November 20, 7-10 pm on 24th Street in the Mission. Join us for a community celebration featuring an unveiling of the newest storefronts along 24th Street, a reception hosted by Triple Base Gallery (3041 – 24th Street at Treat Street), live music, Aztec dancers and more. The first two launches in the Central Market and Tenderloin (Oct. 23) and in the Bayview (Oct. 30) were great successes. The 2009-2010 Art on Market Street Poster Series Now on View The new Art on Market Street Poster Series, Pamela Wilson-Ryckman’s Taking In, will be on view through December 31 between Van Ness Avenue and the Embarcadero. Taking In is a series of watercolors exploring the act of looking, and the various means by which people find respite or refuge within the urban landscape of San Francisco. See more...
The second SFAC Podcast, Deep Roots, now available The second episode of the Deep Roots podcast has been released. It offers a rare look at the sculpture in City Hall of civil rights leader and San Francisco hero, Harvey Milk; its sculptor; and its meaning to the city and the community that it represents. Where Art Lives Launches This month, the Arts Commission in collaboration with the Department of Public Works will launch the “Where Art Lives” Anti-Graffiti Pilot Initiative. Over the course of the 2009-2010 school year, six elementary and middle schools will participate in this new program aimed at educating students on the differences between community art and vandalism. Cultural Equity Grants Deadline The Deadline for Cultural Equity Initiatives-Level 1 applications is December 2, 2009. Narrative drafts may be submitted for feedback by November 9, 5 p.m. CEI-L1 grants are for arts organizations deeply rooted in a historically underserved community (African Americans, Asian Americans, the Disabled, LGBT, Native Americans, Pacific Islanders and Women) to support short-term projects that will assist organizations in strengthening their administrative infrastructure. The 2009-2010 Arts Organization Guidelines and Application is available at: sfartscommission.org/CEG. An application workshop will be held Monday, November 16, 12 - 1:30 p.m. at 25 Van Ness, in the Suite 200 Library. Please email ceg.intern@sfgov.org to RSVP for the workshop.
SFAC Gallery Updates Immediate Future: The 2009 Murphy and Cadogan Fellowships in the Fine Arts runs through Saturday, December 12. Before it closes be sure to catch Michael Barrett’s “Punch Line” viewable 24/7 at the 155 Grove Street Gallery on Saturday, November 21, 1 p.m. The work is set in a boxing ring, in which the right-handed performer wages a fight with his alter ego, a left-handed boxing glove.
