Season Premiere of CultureWire
The 2nd season of the Arts Commission’s cable television program, CultureWire, kicks off Friday, September 4th. Join us on cable station 26 or go to www.sfartscommission.org to catch the new episode where we examine how the Tutankhamun exhibition impacts the economy of San Francisco. Learn how the arts fuel the City’s economy, whether on the large-scale of a major cultural institution (the de Young’s Tutankhamun and the Golden age of the Pharaohs exhibition) or through neighborhood-based arts centers (the African American Art and Culture Complex’s reopening celebration). The monthly cultural calendar will also highlight several events not to be missed.
Maya Lin's Last Public Memorial
World-renowned artist Maya Lin will debut her last public memorial at the California Academy of Sciences on Thursday, September 17th. Entitled What is Missing?, the permanent site-specific sculpture is the international debut of the first component of a multi-sited, multimedia artwork dedicated to raising awareness about the current crisis surrounding biodiversity and habitat loss. The dedication of the sculpture marks a milestone for the San Francisco Arts Commission's Public Art Program, which commissioned the new work along with Lin's first sculpture at the Academy,Where the Land Meets the Sea, which debuted last year at the museum's opening. The Academy is the only institution in the world to house two permanent sculptures—an artwork and a memorial—by Lin. View the Press Release...

Participate in the “Artists and Economic Recession Survey”:
Help determine if the Bay Area’s recession is over, or if it’s still going strong. How are these economic times affecting artists around San Francisco? This survey is being conducted by Leveraging Investments in Creativity (LINC), a ten-year national initiative to improve conditions for artists, in partnership with the San Francisco Arts Commission, San Francisco Foundation and East Bay Community Foundation, and supervised by Princeton Survey Research Associates International. There’s strength in numbers, so make sure your voice is heard by completing the survey yourself, AND, by forwarding it to every other artist you know! Reaching as many artists as possible improves the quality of this important research, and better equips everyone who advocates for artists and the arts. The survey takes about 15 minutes, and is offered in English and Spanish. Survey website...
