What: Solo exhibition of original poster art by Seyed Alavi

Artist Seyed Alavi probes the issue of personal identity in "Who Am I?" a San Francisco Arts Commission sidewalk exhibition of composite portraits on the kiosks along Market Street, between the Embarcadero and Van Ness, February 15 through May 16, 2002. Twenty four posters-four copies each of six different portraits-are on display. The exhibition is presented by the Commission’s Market Street Art in Transit program, which brings work by local artists into the daily environment of Market Street workers, shoppers and other pedestrians.
Alavi created his portraits by layering individual photos he took of merchants, residents, visitors and others he met while walking along Market Street. No individual is recognizable in the resulting composites, which reflect the diversity of people frequenting the three-mile corridor.
Alavi’s work has been shown in numerous museums and galleries, including the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, San Francisco.
