Temporary art project by artist team Wowhaus on Market Street

Life on Market Street: An Audio Archive, an art event exploring contemporary life on San Francisco’s main thoroughfare, will take place at three consecutive locations on Market Street on Thursday, April 1, 2004. As part of the San Francisco Arts Commission’s Art on Market Street Program, this project by the artist team Wowhaus, consisting of Scott Constable and Ene Osteraas-Constable, has two related aspects: a CD/map package and a day-long series of low-frequency radio broadcasts from a mobile studio located on Market Street on April 1.

On April 1, a series of pre-recorded interviews with workers and residents of Market Street will be broadcast on radio station 850 kHz AM from a reflective mobile studio located at three consecutive locations and times on Market Street: United Nations Plaza (at 7th Street), from 9 AM to 11 AM; Hallidie Plaza (at Powell), from 12 PM to 2 PM; Justin Herman Plaza (at the Embarcadero), from 3 PM to 5 PM. During these times, people in the immediate vicinity of the mobile studio will be able to hear the broadcast on their radios. The mobile studio, designed and built by Wowhaus, is clad in mirrored panels and hemispheres reflecting back nearby Market Street surroundings at each site.

This series of interviews will also be available on a CD, 2000 copies of which will be publicly distributed free of charge on Market Street on April 1. The interviews are recorded in sequential order, beginning at the Embarcadero and continuing down Market Street to the Castro District. Included with the CD is a map designating the location of each interview, to encourage listeners to take a self-guided walking tour down Market Street while listening to the CD.

The Art on Market Street Program has commissioned over 48 temporary art projects on Market Street since 1992 in a wide variety of media. The program sponsors events by Bay Area artists reflecting the nature of San Francisco’s main urban street, bringing contemporary art to thousands of Market Street workers and visitors each year.
