NEW SCULPTURE INSTALLATION BY PEPE OZAN

The San Francisco Arts Commission is pleased to announce the installation of a sculpture by San Francisco artist Pepe Ozan. The sculpture, entitled Invocation has been installed at the juncture of Cesar Chavez and Vermont Street adjacent to the Cesar Chavez Bicycle Overpass. This is the Arts Commission’s 8th project to be installed within the past year as part of the Sculpture in the City Program.

Fabricated from steel by the artist in his studio in the Bayview district with the assistance of Morgan Raimond, the sculpture, standing 10 feet high, depicts a majestic and mythic creature, which is part bird and part human. It is intended to honor the indigenous heritage of the people of this region.

Ozan is one of the first residents of Project Artaud in San Francisco, a pioneering artists’ live work collective. Mr. Ozan designs sculptures, theatre sets, and furniture, as well as writing and directing the operas performed at the Burning Man Festival. Ozan is a filmmaker as well, recently returning from several months in India where he and collaborator Melitta Tchaicovsky produced a documentary on the origins of gypsies.

The Department of Public Works, the Department of Parking and Traffic and Caltrans were important collaborators in the realization of the project.

Funding for Invocation, mandated by the City’s Percent for Art Ordinance, was generated by the construction of the Cesar Chavez Bicycle Overpass and was provided by the Department of Parking and Traffic.
