DeFeo at the de Young
The San Francisco Arts Commission is pleased to announce the loan of Jay DeFeo’s painting Masquerade in Black to the de Young Museum of San Francisco. Painted between 1974 and 1975, the work was first exhibited in “Jay DeFeo: Paintings and Drawings” at the Gallery Paule Anglim in San Francisco. The Arts Commission purchased ‘Masquerade in Black’ in 1980 for the collection of the San Francisco International Airport, where the painting remained on display until 2004. A dramatic example of the artist’s Loop Series, ‘Masquerade in Black’ is a diptych in acrylic on masonite measuring 8’ x 8’.
