Maya Lin, Where the Land Meets the Sea, 2008

The first permanent artwork in San Francisco by Maya Lin was accepted into the Civic Art Collection during the October 6, 2008 meeting of the Full Arts Commission. Created for the West Terrace of the California Academy of Sciences, Where the Land Meets the Sea is fabricated from 5/8 inch marine grade stainless steel tubing and measures 36’ x 60’x 15’. Like a line drawing in space, the work is suspended by thin steel cables from the terrace’s solar canopy and depicts the topography, both above and below sea level, between Angel Island and the Golden Gate.
