In the summer and fall of 2008 the Arts Commission contracted Architectural Resources Group, a San Francisco-based practice specializing in architectural rehabilitation and material conservation, to complete restorative treatment of Portals of the Past in Golden Gate Park.

Following 2006’s seismic stabilization, the monument was cleaned, patched and plastered. In order to re-create missing elements, a new cast stone column, capitol and base was molded from the existing structure and anchored in exact position. All masonry joints were then carefully filled and the base plaque was cleaned and waxed.

Stainless steel flashing

Finally, new stainless steel flashing was installed to prevent water from seeping into the structure and causing further damage.
