Valencia Streetscape Improvement Project: Community Involvement
VALENCIA STREETSCAPE ARTIST SELECTION PROCESS
The Arts Commission will commission an artist to create artwork as part of the Valencia Streetscape Improvement Project. The artist will be selected through an open, selection process designed to elicit a range of options and opinions. For this process, the Commission will convene an independent selection panel made up of seven individuals: The Department of Public Works Project Manager, Kris Opbroek, the project landscape architect, two members of the community, and two independent art experts, and an Arts Commissioner.
OPPORTUNITIES FOR COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT

At this meeting, members of the public will have the opportunity to share their visions and goals for Valencia Street and elect two members of the community to serve on the Artist Selection Panel.

Late May
In late May, the semi-finalists will attend an orientation meeting with community representatives, the project landscape architect, and Arts Commission and DPW project managers to discuss the art opportunity and community interests for the street. Based on information obtained at the orientation meeting, the three artist finalists will prepare artwork proposals, which will be on public display for five to seven days in June for written public comment. Comments will be forwarded to the panelists prior to their final meeting.
Wednesday, July 8 – 25 Van Ness, Suite 70 (lower level)
Finally, the selection panel will reconvene to interview the three finalists and select one of the three proposals for implementation as part of the Streetscape Improvements. The panel’s recommendation will be sent to the Arts Commission for final approval.
All panel meetings and the orientation meeting are open to the public.
