Overview of Artist Selection Process
The Arts Commission is working with members of the community and staff from the Recreation and Park Department and the Department of Public Works to commission a public artwork for the Valencia Streetscape upgrade. As part of the process, the Arts Commission convened a Valencia Streetscape Artist Selection Panel that includes two community representatives, Clare Hyland and Elizabeth Aife Murray; arts professionals Carolina Ponce De Leon, Galeria de la Raza, and Kevin B. Chen, Intersection for the Arts; and Department of Public Works Landscape Architect, John Dennis.

The Valencia Streetscape Artist Selection Panel selected four finalists to prepare artwork proposals for the upgraded section of Valencia Street. The four finalists are Michael Arcega, Ana Teresa Fernandez, Brian Goggin, and Misako Inaoka. After an orientation meeting, each of the artists spent six weeks developing their proposals, which are on view from September 4 to September 14 at the Mission Cultural Center and on the Arts Commission website for public comment.

At the Selection Panel’s final meeting scheduled for September 16th at 9 am, the panelists will interview each of the four finalists, discuss their proposals, and then decide which artist to recommend to the Arts Commission for final approval. The Selection Panel will receive all written public comments from the proposal exhibition prior to this final meeting.

The final Selection Panel meeting will take place at 25 Van Ness, Suite 70. Only one artist will be selected to create his or her proposed artwork for Valencia Street. All artist selection panel meetings are open to the public.
