Overview of Artist Selection Process
The Arts Commission is working with members of the community and staff from the Department of Public Works to commission a public artwork for the Leland Avenue Streetscape Improvement Project. As part of the process, the Arts Commission convened a Leland Avenue Streetscape Artist Selection Panel that includes two community representatives, Marlene Tran and Anne Seeman; two arts professionals, Amy Trachtenberg, artist, and Rene De Guzman, Visual Arts Curator, Oakland Museum; and Project Architect, John Dennis.
The Leland Avenue Streetscape Artist Selection Panel selected three finalists to prepare artwork proposals for the new Leland Avenue Streetscape Improvement Project: Michael Arcega, Julio Morales, and Rebar Group. After meeting with the Project Architect, Arts Commission staff, and community members, the three finalists spent six weeks developing their proposals, which are currently on view at the Visitacion Valley Branch Library from September 11 through September 21, 2009.
The Selection Panel’s final meeting is scheduled for Thursday, October 1, 9 am to Noon, at the Arts Commission offices located at 25 Van Ness, Suite 70. The panelists will interview each of the three finalists, discuss their proposals, and then decide which artist/proposal to recommend to the Arts Commission for final approval. The Selection Panel will receive all written public comments from the proposal exhibition prior to this final meeting. All artist selection panel meetings are open to the public.
Proposals are also available for viewing online at the Arts Commission website: http://www.sfartscommission.org/pubartcollection. Comments may be emailed to Mary Chou by September 21 at 5 pm at the following email address: mary.chou@sfgov.org. Please briefly describe your opinions about the strengths of each artist’s preliminary design approach and its appropriateness for the Leland Avenue Streetscape Improvement Project.
