Overview of Artist Selection Process

The Arts Commission is working with members of the community and staff from the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency and the Department of Public Works to commission public artwork for the streetscape at Church Street and Duboce Avenue. As part of the process, the Arts Commission convened an ad hoc artist selection panel that includes two community representatives, Garrin Wong with the Doboce Triangle Neighborhood Association and Kenneth Wingard with the Castro/Upper Market Community Benefit District; three arts professionals, Joseph Becker, Assistant Curator of Architecture and Design, SFMOMA; Zac Frank, former Special Projects Director, Urban Art Program, NYC Department of Transportation; Julio Morales, artist; project team representative Kris Opbroek, Department of Public Works; and Arts Commissioner Cass Calder Smith.

The artist selection panel met on June 5, 2009 to review the qualifications of the sixteen artists in the candidate pool. At that first meeting, the selection panel selected three finalists to prepare artwork proposals for the streetscape at the intersection of Church Street and Duboce Avenue. Artists Rebar Group, Masayuki Nagase and Primitivo Suarez-Wolfe were selected to create proposals for sculptural streetscape elements to be installed near the new upgraded Muni transit island on the north side of Duboce Avenue and near an existing bus shelter on the east side of Church Street next to Safeway.  The three finalists, along with members of the selection panel, the project team and the community, met on July 30th for a project orientation. Each of the artists spent six weeks developing their proposals, which are on view from October 1st to 14th at the Harvey Milk Recreation Center and on the Arts Commission website for public comment.

At the selection panel’s final meeting scheduled for October 20th, the panelists will interview each of the three finalists, discuss their proposals, and then decide which artist/proposal to recommend to the Arts Commission for final approval. The selection panel will receive all written public comments from the proposal exhibition prior to this final meeting.

The final selection panel meeting will take place at 25 Van Ness Avenue, Suite 70. All artist selection panel meetings are open to the public. Please visit the Arts Commission website for the specific room, date and time of the meeting at: http://www.sfartscommission.org/pubartcollection.
