“Walking Behind,” a poster series by by Kerry Loewen
Walking Behind, a series of artworks designed for exhibition on Market Street by artist Kerry Loewen, features photographs of close-up portraits taken from behind of Market Street pedestrians. Loewen photographed individuals to appear to viewers as though they are walking behind the person in the images. The series will be on view in kiosks on Market Street between Van Ness Avenue and the Embarcadero from Monday, February 16, to Thursday, May 13, 2004.
While the posters indicate the individuals photographed for this series represent six types — The Suit, The Drag Queen, The Artist, The King, The Tourist, and The Student — they are not recognizable other than as ordinary pedestrians. The slightly backward glance of the figures in the photographs indicates an awareness that they are being observed.
Kerry Loewen received his M.F.A. from San Francisco State University in 2003. He is currently an SFSU Post-Graduate Artist-in-Residence at the Romberg Tiburon Center in Tiburon, CA. In 2003, his work was exhibited at the San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art, and a series of his large-scale photographs were displayed on the Muni light rail platform on 19th Avenue at Hollingsworth.
Walking Behind is a project of the San Francisco Arts Commission’s Art on Market Street Program sponsoring both a year-round poster series and temporary performances and events by Bay Area artists.
