Champions of Market Street, a series of posters of original artwork by Katherine Aoki celebrating random acts of kindness between strangers, will be installed in 24 triangular kiosks on Market Street between Van Ness and the Embarcadero from Monday, August 16, through Thursday, November 11, 2004. The artist created six hand-cut linoleum prints designed to resemble comic book covers, each featuring a pedestrian outfitted as a superhero engaged in an ordinary gesture of generosity. These underappreciated everyday heroes include Smile Guy, Daring Door Holder, Returno, Clean Machine, Ms. Excuse Me and Ultra Guide.

Katherine Aoki, who teaches at the University of Santa Clara, has exhibited most recently at the Richmond Art Center, Richmond, CA; the Oakland Art Gallery, Oakland, CA; the Douglas Flanders Gallery, Minneapolis, MN; and Southern Nevada Community College, Las Vegas, NV. She has been awarded artist residencies at Headlands Center for the Arts Sausalito, CA and the MacDowell Colony, Petersborough, NH.

Champions of Market Street is a project of the San Francisco Arts Commission’s Art on Market Street Program.
