Amanda Hughen and Jennifer Starkweather, Between above and below
Exhibition
March 12 to July 12, 2007 in the Market Street triangular kiosks between Van Ness and the Embarcadero.
Artists Amanda Hughen and Jennifer Starkweather’s six poster images, titled Between above and below, reflect their exploration of various systems in the San Francisco Bay Area. Each poster consists of a collaborative drawing in which the artists isolated and juxtaposed particular forms and patterns derived from built systems and natural movements, such as traffic, tides, trees, bike racks, and more.
Artist Walking Tour
Saturday, April 21 at 1 PM.
Join artists Amanda Hughen and Jennifer Starkweather and David Buuck for a free walking tour to view and discuss the poster exhibition and to obtain a free printed catalog. The walk begins at the southeast corner of Market at Third Street and continues east to the Embarcadero. The walking tour will be held rain or shine.
Project Catalog
In conjunction with the poster installation, the artists will produce a printed catalog of the artworks in the series, with additional text by write David Buuck. The book will provide a window into the artists’ process of developing the abstract images by revealing some of the source materials—maps and photographs—used as inspiration for the artworks. The catalog will be available free of charge on the walking tour and beginning April 23rd at the Arts Commission offices located at 25 Van Ness, Suite 240, during regular weekday business hours.
Artists
Amanda Hughen is a visual artist who explores mass-produced, utilitarian forms in the built environment. She examines the nuance that emerges from the repetition of rigid forms within a system, and explores the patterns that result, both accidental and intentional.
Jennifer Starkweather’s artwork has ranged from examining fingerprints and animal prints, to shadows and floor plans. She is interested in collecting and examining marks that map movements, behaviors, spaces and processes of natural or human occurrences.
The Art on Market Street Program brings contemporary art by Bay Area artists to San Francisco’s main thoroughfare.
The San Francisco Arts Commission Art on Market Street Program is funded in part by the San Francisco Metropolitan Transportation Agency and CBS Outdoor.
