Luis R. Cancel, Director of Cultural Affairs of the San Francisco Arts Commission, is pleased to announce the completion of a new public artwork, Swimmers’ Waves, by San Francisco artist Catherine Wagner. The artwork includes 27 photographic metal panels, most of which are 22 inches high by 96 inches wide. The artwork is installed on one of the natatorium walls of the new Sava Pool facility, which is designed by Mark Cavagnero Associates and located on the corner of 19th Avenue and Wawona.
Artist Catherine Wagner photographed swirling waves created by a swimmer as a the basis for her Sava Pool artwork. She juxtaposed these photographic images and reproduced them in a deep blue color on the porcelain enamel panels that are installed intermittently across an unpainted concrete wall at Sava Pool. The art panels complement the dark blue color of the custom-made Heath ceramic tiles installed on adjacent natatorium walls, and reflect the constantly changing surface of the water in the swimming pool.
Catherine Wagner is an artist based in San Francisco whose artworks are in the collections of the De Young Museum and the San Francisco Museum of Art in San Francisco, the Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum of Art in New York City, the Los Angeles County Museum and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, and the Museum Folkwang in Essen, Germany, among other places. She is currently working on two large-scale public art commissions, one for the Los Angeles Police Department Headquarters and the other for The Village in the Santa Monica Civic Center, both in Southern California.
