Background:

This fall, the new Laguna Honda Hospital resident buildings will open for occupation, and the facility’s some 800 residents will move into their beautiful new facility. The Hospital provides care, housing, and support services for .a large population with a diversity of medical, nursing, physical, social, and cultural needs..  The resident population includes individuals who require long term care, rehabilitation services, and hospice care. The complexity and diversity of the individuals served, and the strong feeling of community among the residents, staff and volunteers, is what makes Laguna Honda a unique institution. Among the many patient amenities the new hospital will provide is a large and diverse art collection made possible through the city’s art enrichment ordinance which mandates 2% of the construction cost of capital projects be allocated for art.

Project Description: As part of the public art program, the Arts Commission is allocating $225, 000 to purchase, frame and install a number of 2-dimensional artworks, including paintings, prints, and photographs for display in the public areas of the resident floors. In addition, the Hospital has allocated some of its furniture and fixtures (FF&E) budget to the purchase of art reproductions for the individual patient rooms.  By combining these two budgets, the Arts Commission has developed a unique plan to provide original artwork by Bay Area artists for display in public areas, as well giving residents the opportunity to select artwork for their rooms.

The Arts Commission will be purchasing between 25-30 original artworks, which will become part of the Civic Art Collection and be displayed in the public areas of the hospital resident floors.  In addition to the purchase price of the original artwork, the Arts Commission may request to purchase license to print a limited edition (25-30) of inexpensive ink-jet prints for the patient rooms.

Budget for the Purchase of Original Works of Art:

Size: Original works of art, maximum size 36” in any direction, unframed

Purchase Price: Up to $8,500, although most purchases will be under $2,500.

Licensing fee:  $1,000 for up to 30 ink-jet prints.

Purchase of Existing prints:

We will also consider the purchase of existing editions of prints for patient rooms with purchase prices under $250 for unframed work.

Selection process and schedule:

Submissions will be reviewed by Arts Commission staff to develop a short list of appropriate work to be submitted for review to a Hospital committee comprised of patients and staff.  Final recommendations will be submitted to the Arts Commission for final purchase approval.

Short list selection:  by May 15, 2010

Final Selection:  by July 30, 2010
