Possible Relocation of "Invocation" by Pepe Ozan to Palega Park

In 2016, the San Francisco Arts Commission removed Zephyros, an outdoor kinetic sculpture by REBAR Art and Design Group from Palega Recreation Center due to mechanical failure. After thorough analysis it was determined that the artwork could not be safely returned to park. As a replacement for the damaged sculpture, the Arts Commission would like to relocate Invocation, by Pepe Ozan to Palega. Because there is no additional art enrichment funding for a newly commissioned artwork for Palega this relocation would ensure outdoor artwork for the park.

Invocation

Pepe Ozan

Pepe Ozan (1939-2013) was a San Francisco artist and award-winning documentary filmmaker known for his large-scale sculptures and participatory performances created for Burning Man. He was one of the first residents of Project Artaud, a pioneering artists’ collective in the Mission District, and his work has exhibited at the San Jose Museum of Art, in Golden Gate Park, and along the Blue Greenway Trail.

In 2004, the Arts Commission commissioned Pepe to create an artwork for the Cesar Chavez Boulevard bicycle infrastructure project. Invocation depicts a Mesoamerican Eagle Warrior and honors indigenous heritage and cultures. The work is made of painted steel and stands ten feet tall with a wingspan of eight feet. If relocated to Palega Rec Center, the artwork would be reengineered and repainted, and its concrete pedestal recast to its existing design and dimensions. The sculpture would be sited in the same location as the previous artwork.

Pepe Ozan
