Rewriting Narratives: Printmaking with Keith Secola

Join Bay Area artist Keith Secola for a conversation and hands-on printmaking workshop! In his current solo exhibition, Wounds Many: Portraits of the Northern Ute, Secola prints archival images of members of his family onto American history books. In doing so, he inserts his family’s history, and in turn the history of Native people, back into these books, which had historically left them out.
The workshop will start with a presentation by Secola about his work and the ideas that underpin it followed by an opportunity to print using new screens made specifically for this workshop. Materials will be provided however if you have items from home that you would like to print on please feel free to bring them. Any 2D material—paper, book covers, fabric, etc.— will work. When choosing materials to bring, consider what narratives (personal or historical) you would like to interrupt.
Keith Secola (Mino Mashkiki Wish Kang, Ute Indian Tribe / Bois Forte Chippewa) was born and raised in the Southwest. In 2018, he earned his MFA from the California College of the Arts in San Francisco. His work has been exhibited at Kala Art Institute (Berkeley), the Minneapolis American Indian Center, the Minnesota Museum of Art (St. Paul), Root Division (San Francisco), Self-Help Graphics (Los Angeles), and SOMArts Cultural Center, among others. keithsecolajr.com
